Festive buns for the pirate party

I found this recipe the other day some interesting balls at a danish website which would be great for the children’s birthday with the pirate theme.

The recipe is for 48 small buns, so there should be enough to all. It can easily be frozen but without the glaze. Furthermore, we make the glaze a bit less liquid, so it is fixed properly on top.

The dough for the Buns

  • 200 g butter
  • 2 cups milk
  • 400 g cottage cheese
  • 100 g of yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 125 grams sugar (about 1 ½ cups)
  • 2 teaspoons coarse salt
  • 950 g plain flour

Pirate-glaze
  • 375 g icing sugar (about 7 cups)
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 500 g of mixed sweets such as liquorice strips and filled licorice sticks, cut into small pieces. Small gummy bears, licorice colored-balls and chocolate lentils
Baking time: Approx 10 min. at 200 °.

Method:

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add milk.
  2. Pour mixture into a bowl and add the eggs.
  3. Stir the yeast in it.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients (holding back a little flour).
  5. Turn the dough well together.
  6. Cover the bowl with a lid and place the dough to rise in a warm place for approx. half an hour.
  7. Take the dough out onto a floured surface and beat it well.
  8. Add perhaps the rest of the flour.
  9. Form 48 buns and arrange on bake pans with baking paper.
  10. Let the buns rise covered, for approx. 20 min.
  11. Press dough buns slightly and bake in center of oven.
  12. Let them cool.

Pirate-icing:

  1. Combine the icing sugar and milk together into a thick glaze.
  2. Mix candy in a bowl. Garnish one dumpling at a time.
  3. Lubricate it with glaze and dip the candy.
  4. Let the pirate-buns stand until glaze is set.

Have you planned a treasure hunt, you can make a little more fun out of it by baking a treasure into the buns:
Draw a treasure map and cut it into smaller pieces.
Wrap each piece in wax paper and put them into the raw muffins or buns before baking.
